Tekil kişilerle “was”, çoğul kişilerle “were” yardımcı fiili kullanılır. Olumsuz cümlelerde ise “was not” ya da “wasn’t”, “were not” ya da “weren’t” kullanılır.

B: I was studying English.

2. Geçmişte daha kısa olan bir eylem tarafından bölünen uzun bir eylemle “past continuous tense” kullanılır. Bu durumda kısa olan eylemi anlatmak için ise “past simple tense” kullanılır.
